WQ – You Are the Only You
Start telling the stories that only you can tell, because there’ll always be better writers than you and there’ll always be smarter writers than you. There will always be people who are much better at doing this or doing that – but you are the only you.
Tarantino – you can criticize everything that Quentin does – but nobody writes Tarantino stuff like Tarantino. He is the best Tarantino writer there is, and that was actually the thing that people responded to – they’re going ‘this is an individual writing with his own point of view’.
There are better writers than me out there, there are smarter writers, there are people who can plot better – there are all those kinds of things, but there’s nobody who can write a Neil Gaiman story like I can. ― Neil Gaiman
As I’ve been working on the novel, that little voice in the back of my mind has been sneaking through the locks and chains and cement walls I placed around it to irritate the creative part of me. It’s been telling me I’m no good and that I’m not unique and that I have nothing worthwhile to say. Some of which may be true, but if I’m going to continue as a creator I can’t listen to any of it. I am unique and that means even if there are better or smarter writers I am the only one who will be able to write the stories that I want to write.
There will be those who criticize me and those who try to tear me to pieces because they don’t like what I’m writing. But there will also be those who love what I’ve written because they haven’t read anything like it before (those people may only be my mother and my boyfriend but gosh darn it at least there’s someone). There will always be critics but if we let the critics stop us then art would have ceased to exist long before now.
If you have a critic getting on your nerves, hold your head up high and keep pushing forward. All the critics will do is talk. Prove them wrong.
